Taraba varsity suspends lecturer over protest, increases fees

The management of Taraba State University has suspended a lecturer for allegedly taking part in Wednesday's students' demonstration.

The varsity also announced an increment in school fees.

In a letter addressed to the Dean Faculty of Arts and signed by the registrar of the university, the lecturer (name withheld) was suspended for his alleged participation in the demonstration.

'The attention of management has been drawn to the fact that you participated in an unauthorized demonstration that disrupted the first semester examinations for the 2021/2022 academic session. This act is against the laid down rules and regulations of the university.

'In light of the above, management wishes to inform you that you are hereby placed on indefinite suspension without salary until the Staff Misconduct and Disciplinary Committee investigates your case and advised management appropriately. To this end, you are to hand over all university properties under your custody to the Dean, Faculty of Arts with immediate effect,' the letter reads.

Meanwhile, students of the university have decided to sue the university for increasing school fees.

A memo signed by the Confidential Secretary to Registrar of the institution, Sebastian Anthony, indicated that indigenes from the Social and Management Sciences who hitherto pay N44,000 per session will now pay N70,000 per session, while non-indigenes who pay N68,000 per session will now pay N90,000 per session.

A 300-level student of the Taraba State University, Salisu Waziri who spoke to newsmen said the aggrieved students will by next week file a public compliant suit against the school management and the Taraba state government...
