NASENI, NMDC seal pact to revamp iron, steel sector

Memorandum of Understanding (Mou) has been signed to revamp the iron and steel sector and allied industries, it was learnt yesterday.

The pact was signed by the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) and the National Metallurgical Development Centre (NMDC) in Jos, Plateau State.

NASENI's Executive Vice Chairman, Prof. Mohammed Haruna and NMDC Director-General/Chief Executive, Prof Linus Asukwo, signed the MoU in Abuja for both agencies.

Haruna said no meaningful industrialisation effort can yield fruits without the development of the iron and steel sector.

He canvassed Nigeria's need to build most of its machines and equipment locally to deepen the impacts of innovations and to make manufacturing the norm.

The NMDC Jos was established as a research and development organisation with the mandate to carry out research and development activities for the metallurgical and allied industries for the growth of the nation's solid minerals sector.

NASENI has the mandate of providing research and developmental works in the areas of capital goods, machines and equipment to develop a home-grown and home-sustained industrial development of the country.
