CJID trains journalists, media practitioners on election security

The Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) in partnership with the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI) has trained journalists on election security reporting in Nigeria.

The two-day holistic security training workshop held in Lagos, attracted 50 journalists and practitioners drawn from various media outlets.

CJID Deputy Director, Busola Ajibola, stated that the purpose of the training was to refresh understanding of the crucial role journalists play in ensuring credible elections.

She said: 'Society has entrusted journalists with the responsibility of holding those in power accountable to the public.

'This task is however compromised when facts are distorted in our reporting. This training will therefore provide us with knowledge on ways to stem the tides of information disorder in election coverage.

'As journalists, we must therefore continually commit to, and capacitate ourselves to fulfil the watchdog role of promoting rational public discourse that can help citizens make informed decisions and choose better representatives.'

CJID Deputy Manager, Media Freedom, Stephanie O. Adams-Douglas charged participants to focus on issue-based reporting, noting that the training will help equip journalists on all-round safety ahead of the forthcoming polls.
